Nuclear power in NZ

I don't want it!

Why?

Simple- Would YOU trust a nuclear power plant run by the pubic service?

I wouldn't- and that is how it would be in the unlikely event that the powers that be went for that option. They would undoubtably pronounce that ONLY they could be trusted to run a nuclear plant- as they said about prisons.

I wouldn't trust them with a gas barbeque!

Strangely enough, I am quite pro nuclear power. The Chernobyle [or however the hell its spelt] construction type days are a distant past now, and the idiot-proofing is very good.
I do take your point about the tossers in the public service though.....

Having been in an amber alert at Sellafield in the UK (red alert nobody leaves the site or they get shot)and seeing local malformed animals and a high incidence of cancers, I'm not a huge fan.

Also when they decomissioned the 'golfball' which was the reactor they had no idea what the hell to do or what they'd find - that's scary.

Also the levels omitted daily into the local area were not acceptable.

They also processed China's waste for them.

I take your point about the leftist government that can't be trusted. But then again, they will probably never accept nuclear power in the first place..

Simple--just contract the construction and running of the plant out to a company with a good track record.
Then teach the local iwi to run it, and when things fuck up, at least all the local thugs and burglars will be glowing in the dark, thus making them easier to catch.
It's a win/win.

Out of all of the Government Departments, I would have trusted the old NZED and the Ministry of Works to design, build and operate a nuclear power station properly.

In actual fact, the NZED assumed that nuclear power would eventually be utilized in NZ. They made quite a study of it in the late 60s, I read the report some years ago.
