A close call!

Tooling up
This bloke has made the classic mistake- going public. If he does deal to some well deserving scumbag, the crown prosecution office will now be all over his arse!
Rule One: Don't tell anyone. You loose much of the deterrent value, but in NZ that's the way to go.
Rule Two: Don't use a restricted weapon like a pistol, petrol bomb, hand grenade or the MP-40 granddad brought back from his North African adventures. Greg Carvell would confirm this!
Rule Three: Use something that has a reason to be there. A cleaver may be OK in a butchery, but probably not in a dairy. Neither would be an axe, crowbar or baseball bat.
Rule Four: Don't modify it. The baseball bat with six-inch nails in the end won't look good in court.
So- let's look at the linked case- you are in a dairy and Mr Scrote wants free cigarettes and all your money. He doesn't have a firearm (the only real defense here is another gun and the training to use it effectively)
What do you have in the store that could conveniently be held to hand? lets see- a pot of pepper- throw that in the face and Mr Scrote is going to be out of the game. You will at this stage be able to escape or damage his self-esteem further- say by hitting him with something large and heavy.
Another overlooked defensive tool is the dry powder fire extinguisher. This will blind him and choke him- plus has the advantage of being able to do so from several meters away. When empty, the cylinder makes a useful bludgeon!
It will also put out fires, so is a useful tool to have at home and in the car, if you take my suggestion...

The shortest day

Solution- a new pair of headphones- ones big enough to totally cover the ears- not these weenie ipod sort of ones that hurt my ears anyway!
Then afterwards, a retreat to my man-cave to tidy the reloading bench and do a stocktake of components.
Time to stock up and load another couple of thousand for the dry season. In the winter I shoot black powder, so I don't have to look for lost cases in the mud. And I don't start fires at this time of year!

The 'C' word again!
Compulsory!
Here is yet another election year bit of grandstanding:
"...The Government is seeking views on whether third party vehicle insurance should be compulsory..."
Like most of their ideas, this too would prove a rotten fizzer.
Why?
Because many people won't register or warrant their cars- these being compulsory NOW! -what chance they would insure them?
If the 3rd party is built into the rego- they simply won't have either! You don't need a degree in rocket science to figure that one out.
You just have to be smarter than a Lairbour politician or a slime mould...

Slime and punishment
It has been said recently that prison is no deterrent, prison IS a deterrent and others say it is too harsh- while others that it is too soft. Truth is- all of these statements are true.
Prison is no deterrent to the recidivist offender, who merely regards it as a part of life, an inconvenience suffered when caught.
Prison is a deterrent to many- thus they don't wind up going there, so they avoid the behaviors that send you inside. This is a hard one to quantify, for obvious reasons!
Prison is very harsh to a person who has lead an otherwise good life and through circumstances finds them self on the wrong side of the law. They have committed the sort of crime that you could say 'there but for the grace of God, goes I!' I have heard the stories of several like this and they do their time very hard indeed.
Prison is a walk in the park to a lowlife who has lived rough and never made any effort to move up from the bottom. They get fed, clothed, have a warm bed and get free medical attention.
My idea for prison reform are that minor and first time offenders get a short sharp shock- a relatively short sentence in a minimum type security, with hard work and spartan conditions. This is a taste of things to come.
The price goes up for each offense.
After several offenses- depending on the seriousness of the convictions, the courts with rule as to whether the individual is a confirmed recidivist. if they are, it's off to the Gulag with them.
Here they spend the rest of their days earning their potatoes & cabbage sorting the garbage of the country into recyclables.
An important factor in prison reform is that prisons should NOT be used as de facto mental institutions- as they are now. These people need treatment not punishment, although some are too dangerous to ever be allowed out, so its a specialist prison for the mentally insane needed there.
Another fact we must no forget- the role of prison is primarily to KEEP THE PUBLIC SAFE. This is done by locking criminals away from the public. Rehabilitation (yeah, right) is a side issue and the guts of the matter is that it is of a 'take a horse to water' nature.

"The police volunteer to do some unpleasant work in our community, and I applaud them for that. Yet in order to have our support, they should be prepared to justify their actions," said Peter Linton, Libertarianz Firearms Spokesman, today. "That's why Libertarianz supports Marie Dyhrberg's call for extra detail to be released on the police trial regarding tasers."
"While it is not necessary to release the names of individual officers and participants, it is important for the public to view the raw data collected from these trials to see how the police reached their conclusions," says Linton. "Openness from the police will go some way to repairing their reputation, which has been tarnished lately by some wayward officers."
"We must question however, why the police want the taxpayer to fund yet another form of self-defense when they already have access to batons, pepper-spray, martial arts maneuvers and, when necessary, firearms," Linton says. "If tasers are indeed necessary for police to defend themselves with, then they should also be made available to ordinary New Zealanders for this same purpose."

Now much has been said on the cost of fuel. The fact that it is grossly overtaxed is still relevant, as is the speed at which the price rises up- faster than a ballistic missile.However, I cast my mind back some years to 1982- I clearly recall petrol going into my motorcycle at $0.99/litre.
Back then, beer was about $7 swappa crate- cans & stubbies were a rare andexpensive novelty. A decent bottle of wine could be had for under $3-4 and I was on about $14k/year! $20k was the big money!
If petrol had followed at the same rate as drink, it would now be well over $3/litre.
Petrol is still relatively cheap. The problem has been the speed at which the price has risen.
If it has climbed at the same rate as everything else, nobody would bat an eyelid.
And the price hikes have by no means finished!
