Blessed are the Cheesemakers

"A grandmother who hand-milks four cows has taken on the world's best cheesemakers and won - but she's facing defeat at the hands of Ministry for Primary Industries food safety officers.
Biddy Fraser-Davies' boutique Cwmglyn Farmhouse Cheese, from Eketahuna, has won a silver medal at the World Cheese Awards, been served up at Prince George's Government House playdate, and is on the menu at top Wellington restaurants Logan Brown, The White House and Shed 5.
Tourists flock to her 4.4-hectare farm 20 minutes north of Masterton to enjoy a unique, gate-to-plate culinary and farming experience. Each of her cheeses bears the name of the jersey cow whose milk was used to make it.
And folks wonder why people don't stick their necks out and open a small business.
Because the asshole in grey shoes, with all the power and resources of the state, will grind down anyone who dares to work outside of the corporate or the state apparatus itself.
They hate the independent trader, the small businessman, the artisan- because they make work for them. It would be so much more convenient to regulate a few large providers. Could it be (and let's say it softly)- that the big boys are better placed to 'provide the right incentives to the inspectorate'?

Was wondering whether the food safety nazis had been after these guys yet

or do they only pursue soft targets?

Neither is my preference of course.

Have bought Biddy's cheese and met the cows. Top cheese alright, but such considerations are irrelevant to the clipboard-wielder.

Mixed feelings.
Did you ever eat the honey from the cottage industry couple who set up their hive alongside a growth of flowering toot?

That breaks all the rules of beekeeping- even I know that and what I know about beekeeping would be kept in a matchbox- without removing any matches!

Idiots like that are why we have these over-reactions for the powers that be. That and they live to overreact...
