Rates rise brings few complaints

Masterton ratepayers are either happily content or apathetic about their rate increase.
Very few have joined in the national cry "we can't afford it" by people throughout New Zealand faced with an increase in their rates.
David Paris, finance manager for Masterton District Council, said the rates department has found "little objection" to the Masterton average increase of 7.7per cent.
Nationally people are complaining about their property value increases being translated into a rates increase, without any consideration of how they are to afford the higher bills

There could be other reasons for the lack of an outcry in what is a low-income area. Something to do with coming from the shallow end of the gene pool.
Seriously, though this town has either agreed to or let happen a lot of expensive big-town projects. The most notable being the 'Aquatic Center' that they didn't need. Masterton already had a good pool and water slide- it just wasn't as flash as the ones found in Upper Hutt of Palmerston North. News flash!- small low income towns can't afford big city stuff!
More so when their basic infrastructure, sewerage for example, is totally inadequate and they are pumping shit into the local river!
As for an Art Center-FFS! how many of the local hillbillies will actually use it!
While you sheeple remain silent about the gold-plated projects driven by interest groups and THE COST TO YOU, this will KEEP HAPPENING.
Other people,s money is SO easy to spend!
I almost believe you deserve to have it happen to you...

I can't believe the level of apathy in enzed at the moment.
We have councils behaving like this, a demonstrably corrupt government, media that seem content to merely recycle government and council press releases as "news"....
And silence from the long-suffering taxpayer. Are we really "sheeple"?
Don't forget, most people who pay rent don't give a flying fuck about rates because it's not visible to them. Those on welfare get more money to ensure they don't need to drink less beer, but they'll use the choice new facilities wont they? Better be free though - not fair otherwise!
While the poor bloody farmer with bugger all services pays a fortune in rates. That's why there shouldn't be a merging of Wairarapa local authorities, because they'll have a bigger base of farmers to fleece for monumental social projects in Masterton etc. The majority are not ratepayers and live in towns that benefit from the minority.
Some useless info for you Oswald,
There are 2,921 working age beneficiaries served by the Masterton WINZ centre (dropped by an impressive 11 in the year to June 2006.)
KG, a ton of people don't care and the rest are beaten down under the weight of all those who don't care.
Hey Oswald, you could always stand for council next year....
That could be interesting when the outfit I work for is a majour contractor to the local council...
It'd be perfectly normal, Oswald. No corruption here. Nothing to see, move along.......
