"...Teenage students would think it was ridiculous that they could go to war, marry and take on debt, but not buy a bottle of wine to have with dinner at the supermarket..."
If you are a student, you ain't in the armed services and thus are not about to go to war.
Wait until you grow up.

3/4 of my basic platoon (TF) were students in 1983. We used to enjoy a drink or 3 (at the baggies) no less than todays teenagers.
80% of the units I served with were conscript students, appies and office trainees aged under 20. A war was going on at the time, so the students went into uniform during semester breaks and the rest served 4 weeks in and 6 weeks out. And everyone either drank like fish or found Jesus [or both] at every opportunity.
Personally I believe the voting age, entry to the military and drinking age should be raised to 20. And anyone sucking on a state benefit should be suspended from voting until they're off the benefit.
Males of 18 summers have been a significant component of every fighting unit since the caveman era. Sorry.
