"Front line police have been given easier access to Taser stun guns.
New police commissioner Peter Marshall said officers were told last week they no longer had to seek approval to strap on a Taser if they thought they were heading into danger.
"Properly trained and qualified staff can now access a Taser without first seeking approval if they are in a situation in which they feel they need to carry one in the interests of safety," Mr Marshall said on the police website.
He said until now front line police had to seek approval from supervisors or the police communications centres in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch..."

What's not to like?
- They only train to 50 metres, anyway.
- The option of birdshot, less lethal, buckshot, slugs or specialty rounds.
- Intimidation factor.
- Lower cost.
- Proven reliability.
- Easier training.
- Less lethal to bystanders.

The police bosses believe that officers can exercise discretion with these (and so they should) but not when you are doing 112 on a clear day on a good open road with little traffic about. I have no problem with Tasers in principle but still think the police attitude to much of their work is driven by things that shouldn't be a factor (like revenue). Until they start to respect NZ citizens more than their political masters they are on a slippery slope.
