I'm betting that is he HAD aborted the fight, he would have been dragged over the coals for doing so. I'm sure the conversation would have gone along the lines 'So do you expect a war to stop because you don't feel safe flying in the rain?'
One word:

I was alway taught that if they went to the bother of a court-martial, somebody was going to be punished.
