"A burglar, finding a Christchurch home so easy to break into, left the owners a note calling them "dumb arse" for not turning their alarm on.
The home in the Christchurch suburb of Avonhead was robbed on Monday and when residents returned home they found the note left by the burglar.
" Put your cat out and turn your alarm on dumb arse," the note read.
Christchurch police's Inspector Gary Knowles said for once police agreed..."
Now the tone of this seems to me that the home owners who fail to take all precautions are at fault for making criminals lives easier for them.
We seem to have lost the plot here. The ONLY ones that ANY blame should be attached to are the thieving lowlifes with no regard whatsoever for other people or their property. It is indeed prudent to lock up when going out- or staying in for that matter, but let's not lose track of the fact that nobody has any right to walk in- or break in and help themselves.
Homeowners should not be mocked for a lapse in their security. The moral obligation is on not stealing- not on locking up the household.
And thieving is not clever. Nor are those who carry it out.
