Democracy- what's wrong with it?

What's wrong with it is that every wanker out there gets a vote.

When a well-considered vote is counteracted by Cletus Possumbrain who votes the same way his alcoholic uncle-father alway did.

Why the hell should the unproductive, the parasites and the permanantly baffled have a say in the running of the county?

Do the bloody livestock on the farm get a say in whats for dinner? Of course not, or steak is off the menu and we are all on frickin' silage!

The right to vote needs to be EARNED- by being self-supporting and a contributer. For performing or having performed some unpleasant or arduous public service- military, police, fireman, paramedic, coast guard, search & rescue. By passing a IQ test or an examination in basic civics. Hell, even having a mortgage is a better qualifer than having just being born here!

If every beneficiary gets a vote, then I should get two- in fact, by my figuring I should get four as my tax bill pays for three dole bludgers each week

Democracy is not a bad idea- when those who pick up the tab are the ones who get to have a say!

And those who only take have the right to shut the fuck up and that's about all...

Well said OB, you have a good point, though i'd be happy with just voluntary voting. I don't get this forced to vote thing here in OZ, is it the same there?

The way i see it, if we make it voluntary, we won't have to put up with those who vote based on who has the best looking placard outside the voting station or who can tell the most amount of lies. On occasion i've heard people on the radio call it the 'ning-nong' vote.

I've been saying this same thing for a while, OB.

Would you mind running for president of the US in 08?

Kay, thanks...

If I was president, there would be a few more 'Ground Zero's' around the world!

And sales of Hemp Rope would be going up...

I heard fro a casual on-call worker yesterday that he was able to sign for income top-ups with WINZ (?) whenever he gets less than 40 hour's work to have his income made up to the full-time equivalent. As awell as an accommodation allowance etc.
And here's the kicker--he swears that the whole process, from registration to claiming can be done online by simply providing a scan of a driver's licence or an eftpos card!
Anyone know if this is true?

That's a great argument for a libertarian system of government, Oswald.

In a libertarian utopia, governing is devolved from the collective to the individual. Meaning that the unproductive, the parasites and the permanently baffled still have a (constitutionally limited) say in the running of the country but no say in the running of you, your life, or your dinner.

Just make it harder. Severely number the polling stations. I'd queue all morning to vote. Lots wouldn't. I can live with the inconvenience to cancel out the dead wood. I would relish watching people turn up, shrug and walk off. They wouldn't be ACT or Libertarian voters Oswald. There's a reason Labour prays for fine weather.

That's right Lindsay- anything that makes it a bit harder, hurts them- not us.

Well said Lindsay.
And you too Oswald.

Democracy is far from foolproof. The people who wind up in power are not the best for the job just the most popular or articulate.

At one time in England you had to be male owning land or with 10 pounds (not a small sum at the time) in a bank account.

Perhaps voters should past an IQ test before getting the right to vote.

The IQ test wouldnt work. Look at the young geeks in the British Labour Party. All with high IQ and absolutely no experience of life and an almost complete absence of "common sense"- which, unfortunately, is not all that "common." People like Douglas Alexander, Ed Balls, the Milliband brothers and Hilary(thats a bloke!) Benn all impress me as fugitives from the planet Zog,completely out of touch with the unfortunate non-thinkers who continually vote to keep them in power. On a visit to my old home town yesterday I saw many consequences of socialist policy. At 6 o'clock in the evening young drunks/druggies wandering about dressed in track suits and carrying the inevitable can of lager, young girls, hardly out of school, some probably still in school, dressed in just-about enough clothes to cover their vital assetts and dragging screaming kids behind them. Babies rearing babies. All these sad specimens have the vote.None of them know a damn thing about the state of the country.Democracy? Fatally flawed and we will pay for it one day as the inmates, increasingly control the nuthouse countries we live in.

There is nothing arduous about being a public servant these days other than devoting ones working day to generating shit. So i'd exclude most public servants from a list of eligible voters.

You can have my vote Oz. Out of respect for my family's military sacrifices I haven't wasted it on a politician for years.
