Back to the orphanage

Given the amount of hand-wringing over the plight of the children of the 'Poor', in NZ- perhaps it is time to bring back the orphanage.

Surely they cannot be as bad as living in the fetid squalor of their lowlife breeders and they can get three decent nutritious meals a day, an education, clothes on the back- as well as learning the virtues of taking pride in work- as opposed to a drugged-out idle and useless existence.

We are aware of the excesses and abuses once committed in such institutions and now know to be vigilant against such acts.

The only way the cycle of abuse is going to be broken is to take kids out of it- and it's no use crying about the so-called parents 'rights'. Removing the breeders income stream may actually do some good too. Unlikely, but it could make some of them decide to work for a living.

Yes, the old type orphanages do have a bad name but they existed in a time when adults were not quite so sensitive as they are now to the emotional needs of children.

We've reached a stage in New Zealand where the police will be at the door if a caring parent smacks her misbehaving child but the reaction to children being physically and emotionally neglected seems to be much more muted.

So you'll feed the hungry child at school? But who will feed him in the weekends and school holidays?
Is it beyond our competence to provide a caring and structured environment for children whose so called homes are frankly not fit places to bring up children?

Not an easy issue to resolve I grant you. We don't want to go to the other extreme of social workers dashing in and removing children when there is no need.Parents must be protected from malicious and unfounded allegations. In other words apply basic honesty and common sense.

It would appear so.

Not so simple. What happens to the kid who, after, say a few years, is returned to the hellhole? It would be about as welcome as a pork chop at a bar mitzvah. A horrible situation for a child who would be forced to unlearn anything good. Also, arguably, kids can be permanently "ruined" well before they come to the notice of authorities. You are on the right track though.
